Maybe the networks know that BSG sucks so much that no one would buy the DVD after they see it. Direct to video for crappy sequels is not unusual.

Family Guy Star Wars episode? Even easier. Lots of people will buy it for Christmas. And then they will also watch it on Sunday night 5 months later because nothing else is on TV Sunday nights.

I think it's because DVD sales have tanked so badly over the last couple years. They're betting that if you're fanboy enough to buy the DVD of an episode before it airs, you'll probably watch it over the air anyway. Either that, or they'll make more scrilla from the number of direct sales than they would if that number of folks didn't watch the airing. Who knows?
